FNM 1: Rebirth
We had six players out for our inaugural Friday Night Monsterpocalypse (FNM 1: Rebirth) tournament.
There were 6 of us that brushed the dust off the old monpoc dice in order to obtain the coveted (insert sarcasm) FNM Heavy Weight Championship Belt:
Yes, that's real fake gold plastic
We decided to play 2 rounds for the tournament as we generally game from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am. Each round was to be 90 minutes and we tried to limit activations to 5 minutes.
Round 1 Results:
Chris (Ultra Ares) vs John (Ultra Sky Sentinel): This was a cagey match where both players were trying to get the upper hand. John just started playing and this was his first ever solo match but he played very well. John was able to avoid Chris's Ares coming in to do power attacks by effectively screening. Chris could only get single damage on Sky Sentinel while John was able to Lightning Attack Ares to get a head on the curve, Game ended at 90 minutes but Sky Sentinel was able to form Ares once so John got his first win in his first game! Chris and I talked about this game afterwards. Sky Sentinel's Lightning attack is a real boon against areas as it is one of the few ways to do 2 damage against Ares power attack negation. Chris also recognized that his Marauders could have come in handy with their explosion trigger which could have damaged Sky Sentinel for 1 point and then triggered to destroy John's screening units. Regardless, this was a close game and I'm sure both look forward to a rematch.
Win for John
Me (Ultra Gakura) vs Skylar (Ultra Zor Magna): This was my first attempt at using Empire of the Apes. I picked Gakura because I wanted something that played more aggressively compared to my usual Ultra Aquosia. Skylar has only played a couple games of Monpoc but he has been able to pick up the game quickly. I lost the roll off so I picked the map. My determining factor for selecting the map was purely something that had a lot of buildings for Gakura and a map I hadn't used...so I chose Road to Ruin. This ended up being a great choice because there are so many buildings right next to each other which really suits Gakura's aggressive style. The game started slow for me as I tried to blitz brawl two buildings but only managed to hit the first (not a good sign when your big brawler misses a defense 4 oil refinery...ughhh). Skylar came in and blasted a few of my units while my turn two saw me blitz two buildings for full Power dice. This is where Skylar made a mistake and moved towards the center of the board. He blasted a few more of my units but he placed himself in slamming range of two buildings with spire and fire hazard respectively. The result was a one shot forming of Zor-Magna for 5 damage. Skylar retaliated for 3 damage to me but I was once again able to do 4 to Zor-Magan and the game was pretty much over in a couple more turns. Wow. gakura is a beast on this map as there are so many ways to do a ton of damage combined with Gakura's insane ability to rack up power dice quickly.
Win for me
Trevor (Ultra Xixorax) vs Matt (Ultra Gorghadratron): Map selection ended up being a bad choice for Trevor. He chose Highway to Hellevue but the way buildings were placed, Trevor had a hard time rampaging with Xixorax. Matt didn't fare much better with his pedestrian Gorghadtron. Both monsters struggled to get through the center as it became clogged with units and burning hazards, Eventually Trevor's Xixorax was able to brawl and beat back Gorghadratron for some significant damage but time was called. End result was a tie as neither could form the other.
Tie
Round 2
Matt 0-0-1 (Ultra Gorghadratron) vs Skylar (0-1-0) (Zor- Magna): I didn't catch to much of this game but when I did look over it was a tit-for-tat power attack bonanza. Skylar selected Road to Ruin but this time he clued into the massive damage capabilities certain pairings of buildings represented. Final round saw both players with one form left with only a few points of health on each. Zor Magna got his chance and threw Gorghadratron for 4 and the win. Congratulations Skylar! This was only Matt's second game ever and just his first loss so no shame in the loss.
Win Skylar
Chris 0-1-0 (Ultra Ares) vs Trevor 0-0-1 (Ultra Xixorax): The father son match. Chris was looking for redemption after his earlier defeat. Knowing Trevor had a powerful rampaging specialist, Chris went in early to try and get the upper hand before Xixorax could build up his dice. A key moment in the game was when Chris saw an opening behind Xixorax where Ares was able to slam Xixorax behind him into a hazardous building and Xixorax's own razor Beetle for 4 damage. This attack managed to form Xixorax and pave the way for a big win for Chris. A tough loss for Trevor as he had a monster that could get around Ares power attack negation with its own supper rampage and juggernaut but Chris did a good job of building his power dice and staying close to Xixorax.
Win Chris
Me 1-0-0 (Ultra Gakura) vs John 1-0-0 (Ultra Sky Sentinel): This game was for the belt and eternal Monsterpocalypse glory...well, not really, but we were both excited none the less. I won the roll off so John picked the map. He selected Block Wars because it wasn't terribly complicated and being new to the game he wasn't interested in teleportation zones and all the rest. I started my monster turn by brawling 2 buildings for 8 power dice which set Gakura up for a quick assault. John, however, knew to stay away so he instead used his monster turn to take out my ape units while sitting snug in a corner next to an indestructible Privateer Press Building. A couple of alternating turns saw gakura move in closer but still out of range. The turning point came on my following monster activation when I moved Gakura for one A dice to John's side of the map but John, not realizing that I was setting up for a series of monster activations continued to strike at my units rather than moving to safety. This opened Sky Sentinel for a big throw into two buildings and 4 damage with Gakura still holding 4 powerdice for a third monster activation. John was able to do 4 damage back to me but not before I formed Sentinel and had him down to his final 4 health. At this point there wasn't much John could do as he was too far back on the damage curve. Gakura followed up with a slam for three damage and the following turn a brawl for the final one point of life. John ended up killing my Alpha form and was happy with that for only his second ever game...great stuff. I ended up taking the prize but best off all, I was able to play the game I love and introduce it to some friends.
Our group rotates tournaments for miniature based games. Right now we play Star Wars X-Wing and Star Trek Attack Wing but Monsterpocalypse has also entered the fray. We play a bunch of different games but our plan is to fit in at least 2-3 tournaments for each system in a year. So hopefully in the not so distant future we will be running FNM 2: Unfinished Business...
It's not MonCon or GenCon but it feels sweet, none the less
